AMD&ART's project sites lend themselves
to interdisciplinary, experiential education. Community education is
fundamental to promoting informed advocacy for the widespread remediation
of AMD, and so AMD&ART is committed to formal and informal teaching.
AMD&ART sites offer opportunities to learn about community history and
the local environment, as well as the science behind AMD and its
treatment.
In the Dark Shade Creek Watershed, AMD&ART and the Brownfields Project worked with community members to form the Shade Creek Watershed Association, which has taken responsibility for monitoring water quality. Volunteer "Krick Keepers" learn first-hand about environmental problems in their watershed. The Dark Shade Brownfields Project has also worked with the Brownfields Center at Carnegie Mellon University to start a Brownfields Job Training Program. Finally, the Dark Shade Brownfields Project is collaborating with two local schools, guiding students in their exploration of a watershed using the disciplines of environmental science and history.
