 AMD&ART
hopes to re-create a sense of place by honoring the past and instilling
hope for the future through the integration of AMD treatment systems into
artful, public places. These places connect residents and visitors to the
rich heritage of Coal Country while repairing the damage done by
pre-regulatory coal mining.
AMD&ART projects help shape a vision for a cleaner environment and a better future. As community members participate in the collaborative design of AMD remediation sites, they develop civic capacity and enthusiasm for community improvement. This societal transformation contributes to the revitalization of places that have been abandoned by industry and neglected by government. Community ties have enabled coal patch towns to endure the mechanization and globalization of the coal industry, but there is still danger that these ties will disintegrate, that the towns themselves will disintegrate. However, working with AMD&ART to restore their environment to health, community members affirm and renew their commitment to their watersheds, to their hometowns, and to one another.
