AMD&ART is a new community enhancement initiative that brings broad public participation to the design and construction of AMD treatment systems and the creation of enjoyable, educational, park-like community landscapes. We believe that AMD is not only an environmental problem but is also a complex cultural issue that can only be solved through an interdisciplinary approach. In this way, we can address the past, present and future of affected communities and engage as broad a constituency as possible. Specifically, AMD&ART is a sequential, three-site project that blends innovative science, responsive landscape design, community history, and active citizen participation to create public spaces in which to explore, learn, reflect, and recreate. In a region crippled by the shifting fortunes of coal in a global economy, AMD&ART works with communities to reclaim a heritage that orange streams have long stained and to work together toward a stronger future.

AMD&ART is public art not merely because it exists in a public space, but more importantly, because it is public in content and form. The subject matter of AMD&ART is an issue of public interest and the process of public participation is an integral part of the work itself. AMD&ART utilizes the knowledge of a dedicated Board of Directors, engages the hands and minds of many talented professionals, and channels the energy of young, dynamic AmeriCorps and VISTA volunteers.
